Educational Institutions

The results of the study on the education/training of young sportspeople in Europe are taken into consideration when this workshop is implemented. A particular focus is set on tertiary education. Unfortunately, the transition from secondary to tertiary education is difficult to accomplish and many drop-outs do occur during this period. (Dual career is relatively easy achievable during the compulsory school period in most EU Member States.) This situation is also true for athletes who would like to start their vocational training after compulsory education. There are many reasons for not entering post-secondary education or in case of being in the system, such athletes drop-out. One might be the fact that after secondary education athletes are sometimes left alone, no plans and no guidance are offered on continuing with higher educational/vocational programmes. Another reason is the difficulty of matching the two schedules of an athlete pursuing post-secondary education: despite of the revelation of the importance of accepting/supporting elite athletes in higher education, most universities are still not able to provide the athletes with a helpful and flexible way of handling their special needs in timing lessons, consultations and exams. Enhanced cooperation and a structured dialogue among sport organisations and the academic world is vital for promoting dual career. The project audits the range and type of educational provision for elite student athletes across the EU. Which university programmes are particularly successful in promoting dual career?
